What have Britons thought of the American Revolution? Is it viewed as a unique disaster or bump on the road to global empire, a wakeup call for a nation that had forgotten its own principles of limited and responsible government or an abiding wound that would ensure the World Wars when they came would be ruinously expensive?

With the help of Edmund Burke, Samuel Jonson and Elizabeth II, Dr. Fimister will attempt a provisional answer to these questions.

Many misconceptions exist regarding the Church’s views on the tradition of “liberal democracy.” Isn’t the Church monarchical? Wasn’t the King chosen by God? Didn’t Pope Leo XIII condemn “Americanism”? Isn’t democracy the product of the Enlightenment the Church so consistently criticizes? And yet, Leo said that the form of government should be chosen by the governed, the tradition adamantly defends private property, and the Declaration clearly declares rights as given to each individual by God.

In this talk, Dr. Nielsen will examine the tensions and the points of contact between Catholic Social Teaching’s presentation of the role of government and the American experiment.

This lecture explores the early history of representative government from the Near East through Greece and Rome. Its central claim is that the fundamental principles of American Republicanism originated not in the Thirteen Colonies but in the ancient Mediterranean world. By considering a series of textual case studies utilized in the St. Ambrose History I curriculum, it is possible to gain a deeper appreciation of our nation’s place in Western Civilization.

America250 Roundtable Panel: The Declaration and the Human Person

Enjoy into a lively chat about how the Declaration shaped our understanding of human rights and dignity.
Join us on Sept. 30 from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Commons for our signature roundtable featuring four distinctive perspectives on the human person and the Declaration of Independence. Designed especially for our upperclassmen, the evening is also an opportunity for parents and the wider St. Ambrose community to join the conversation.
Our hope is to model how thoughtful people approaching these questions from different perspectives can engage in a robust and civil conversation about our national creed.
