BAND NOTES

Band is open to all students at St. Ambrose Academy.

Band is offered to students at St. Ambrose by Overture Band Programs Inc, a non-profit
organization providing band programs to private and parochial schools and home schooled
students in Dane County.

Students who join band receive a weekly 25 minute, semi-private lesson and a weekly 45
minute large group band rehearsal. Band students learn how to play and care for the band
instrument of their choice, how to read music, participate in two performance opportunities
during the school year and are exposed to a variety of music to help develop an affective
appreciation of music. Lessons will be held on Wednesday mornings. Full group band
rehearsal will be on Friday mornings from 8:00 – 8:45 a.m.

The cost of the band program is $650 for the school year. This calculates out to about
$22.50 per week (which is less than the cost of private lessons and offers more opportunities for
the students!) We offer several different payment plan options. The cost of band does not
include the cost of an instrument. Overture Band Programs works closely with the music
store White House of Music. They can provide instruments and all necessary supplies (lesson
books, reeds, etc.) needed, and a store representative stops in the area once a week during the
school year.

Students who were in band last year were mailed re-registration materials in July. You can also
find registration materials and more information about our program on our website –
www.overturebandprograms.weebly.com. Registrations are due before school starts. The first
day of group band will be Friday, September 8th. The first day of small group lessons will be
Wednesday, September 13th.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Nadine Kerl, band director, at
nadinekerl66@gmail.com.

Congratulations to the class of 2024!

Due to illness, we’re having a slight change of plans for tomorrow’s Spotlight Faculty Speaker event. Dr. Denise Ludvik’s talk on genetic engineering will be postponed to a future date, but her husband (and fellow St. Ambrose faculty member) Dr. Geoffrey Ludvik will be presenting on a likewise fascinating topic.

During the academic year, Dr. Geoffrey Ludvik is a beloved history and Latin teacher as well as an active archeologist outside of school. His engaging presentations both in and out of the classroom are a real treat so I encourage you to join if you’re available. Please see below for more details!

God bless,

Aliens, Giants, and Lost Tribes: Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology
with Dr. Geoffrey Ludvik

Tuesday, April 16 from 7:00-8:15 PM | 3 Point Place, Madison

“How do we know the pyramids weren’t built by aliens??? This talk introduces the principles used by historians and archaeologists to separate fact from fiction when examining ancient evidence. This is done focusing on an example from close to home: the Effigy Mounds of Southern Wisconsin and their alleged connection to the Lost Tribes of Israel.”

RSVPS are encouraged but not required: call 608-827-5863 or email carolyn.averill@ambroseacademy.org.

Dr. Geoffrey Ludvik is a member of the Tell el-Hesi Regional Project in Israel and the active dig site there, the Catholic Bible Association, and the American Schools of Oriental Research. He is also currently an honorary fellow at UW-Madison and an Archaeological Research Affiliate with the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University.

Catholic Schools Week | January 28 – February 3

National Catholic Schools Week (CSW) is coming up fast! This annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States allows us to focus on the value that Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation.

Here at St. Ambrose Academy, we’re celebrating by asking classes (grades) to work together in 3 ways: themed dress or costume days, a Penny War fundraiser, and Game Day (Fri., Feb. 2). We will begin Game Day with a mass at St. Maria Goretti and the rest of the day playing sports and games at Keva Sports Center. More information coming soon regarding Game Day.

Here are the themed dress/costume days:

  1. Mon., Jan. 29: Extra SAA Spirit Day (school colors: deep red and gold)
  2. Tue., Jan. 30: “Dressing Day” – each class will choose a theme based on names of salad dressing (Ranch, French, Thousand Island, Caesar, etc.)
  3. Wed., Jan. 31: Movie Day – each class chooses a movie as their theme
  4. Thu., Feb. 1: Formal Wear Day – come in your Sunday best (see SAA Student Handbook under “Semi-Formal Attire”)

Questions can be directed to Ms. Katie Behrens

At the close of the 1st. quarter, the students at St. Ambrose Academy will have an opportunity to participate in a service day in order to take our Gospel call to service and our love of Christ out into the community. On Friday, October 20, 2023 groups of students will be out in the Madison area working at crisis pregnancy centers, stocking food pantries, or just raking the lawn for retired religious. This is a required school-day activity for all of the students – please do not opt out unless it is a previously planned absence. Please complete the following form to give your student(s) permission to be taken off campus in the vehicle of a SAA staff member or parent.

Students will meet at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church (5405 Flad Ave. Madison, WI 53711) from 7:30am and NO later than 8am to attend 8:00am Mass.
Pick up time will be at 3:15pm at St. Maria Goretti.

Please consider chaperoning, we need a lot of volunteer parents. Please indicate on the bottom of this form or go to the SAA sign-up genius. Thank you!

Notes: Students can wear their work day clothes for Mass. They should bring a bag lunch unless directed otherwise.
As parent or legal guardian, you remain fully responsible for any legal responsibility that may result from any personal actions taken by your child.

Per email from Dr. Skemp on 10/5/2023:

“Hello parents of students taking the PSAT,

With just over a week before the administration of the PSAT, I wanted to send again the link to the student guide: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/media/pdf/psat-nmsqt-student-guide.pdf

We are working this week to ensure that all students have internet accessibility at the school and that they are able to download and register on the Bluebook app necessary for taking the exam. I have distributed all the available computers owned by StAmbrose, so if your student has discovered that the device they brought in will not work (i.e. Chrome books or computers that do not have an updated operating system), please help them to find a device that they can use on Saturday, October 14. Here again are the technology requirements: https://bluebook.collegeboard.org/students/approved-devices#:~:text=You%20can%20run%20Bluebook%E2%84%A2,on%20for%203%E2%80%934%20hours.

Let me know if you have any questions and wish us all luck on this new adventure of the digital PSAT!

Peace and all good,

Mary Skemp”
